(General Advance)

DURANGO, SMILEY
IN NEW WESTERN

There’s good news for West-
ern film fans in the advance
reports just arrived from Hol-
lywood. Charles Starrett and
Smiley Burnette, popular action
stars, have been reunited for
the fourth time in another Dur-
ango Kid yarn, Columbia Pic-
tures’ “Two-Fisted Stranger,”
which is scheduled to debut at
the,...... Theatre: on). -e.-

As a team, Starrett and Bur-
nette clicked right from the start
and it was inevitable that Colum-
bia should make every effort to
bring them back as often as
possible. “'wo-Fisted Stranger”
is the latest of the series and
is said to be the slickest of them
all.

Robert Lee Johnson’s screen-
play reportedly captures all of
the adventure of the old West
and complements the action with
just enough humor, music and
romance. The Durango Kid takes
over as a hard-riding, quick-
shooting sheriff to save an un-
suspecting town from a group of
murderous swindlers, and has a
battle on his hands all the way.
Smiley, as his comical deputy,
waddles along for the laughs.

Doris Heuck is on hand as the
romantic jead, while Zeke Cie-
ments, of Grand Old Opry radio
fame, splits the musical chores
with funnyman Burnette. Ray
Nazarro directed.

WESTERN ACTOR
TO BURY ‘DEAD’

Search for a cemetery site has
been started by Charles Starrett,
Western star. Starrett, currently
starred with Smiley Burnette
in Columbia Pictures, ‘T'wo-Fist-
ed Stranger,’ now at the
Theatre, announced that he is
going to establish a “Boot Hill”
in which to properly inter the
villains he kills in the sage
brushers.

Appearing in his 96th Western
since coming to Hollywood fro
New York, Starrett will bring
his total “kills” to 468 in this
Durango Kid epic. Each grave
will be marked by the star with
an appropriate wooden cross,
pioneer design, bearing the name
of the character he shot, and the
title of the picture in which the
outlaw bit the dust.

In each Western, Starrett
shoots five or six outlaws, but
two years ago his screen killings
dropped to practically nothing.
So low did they drop, that kid
fans wrote and asked when he
was going to start killing heavies
again.

Practically every director has
a favorite “go signal” for start-
ing the action of the picture he

who directed Columbia Pictures’
“Two-Fisted Stranger,’ a Dur-
ango Kid Western starring Char-
les Starrett and Smiley Bur-
nette..at the ==. 252 Theatre,
has several different phrases, but

STORY
(Not for Publication)

When a sheriff is murdered, Steve Gordon, the Durango Kid
(Charles Starrett), takes over, assisted by his deputy, Smiley (Smiley
Burnette). A bank is robbed and Jenniver Martin's (Doris Houck)
payroll is hi-jacked. Steve suspects Duke Benson (Ted Mapes) and a

Mr. Brady (Lane Chandler).

Jenniver's ranch property is salted with diamonds by Brady. Smiley,
taking pictures, finds the gems and starts a diamond rush. Jenniver's
father sells a fortune in stock, but soon discovers the hoax. Confronting
Brady, he is slugged and the money stolen from him.

Studying Smiley's pictures, Steve finds proof of Brady's guilt, and
that Benson was an accomplice. As the Durango Kid, he captures them
both and turns the money over to Jenniver, then continues on his
travels as the Robin Hood of the range.

BLAZING ACTION
IN DURANGO HIT

Fans of the ... Theatre who
thrive on Western films have
another treat in store for them.
Charles Starrett, as the Durango
Kid, and his sidesplitting side-
kick, Smiley Burnette, returned
there yesterday in Columbia
Pictures’ bullet-riddled ‘“Two-
Fisted Stranger,” with this great
Western team hitting a new
thrill-fun high in a blistering
new adventure.

The Durango Kid takes over
as the shootin’est sheriff in the
West when a gang of outlaws,
with a murderous scheme afoot,
tries to swindle a town out its
savings. In the furious, slam-
bang action that follows, the Kid
saves the town and his own
reputation, with Smiley waddling
along, providing his hilarious
brand of slapstick humor.

Lovely Doris Houck appears
as the romantic interest and
lends just enough spice to the
yarn. Events are further enliven-
ed when Smiley and Zeke Cle-
ments, the latter of Grand Old
Opry radio fame, render some
snappy Western tunes. Ray Na-
zarro is responsible for the
splendid direction.
